Out of Boundary Request

Out-of-Boundary Waiver — Information for Michigan Families

Who this is for: IYHL players whose home address is in Michigan, and any player on a national-bound Tier II team whose home address is farther than the allowed distance from our home rink.

Why the form is required

Mid Am asks players to register and compete with the association whose geographic boundary covers their home address — the address on your family’s current federal income tax return. Your family lives in Michigan, but skates with us in Indiana. Both are inside the Mid Am district, so this is not a transfer between affiliates. It is simply a boundary waiver: Mid Am documenting that you’re playing at a rink other than the one your address is assigned to.

For most of our families the reason is straightforward — our rink is closer, or the drive is easier, than the association you’d otherwise be assigned to. That is exactly what the mileage lines on the form are there to show.

There is a second reason a waiver may be needed. Mid Am treats Tier II hockey as community-based, and expects national-bound Tier II teams to be made up of players living within 60 miles (youth) or 75 miles (girls) of the team’s home ice arena. If your home address falls outside that radius, the waiver covers that as well.

Waivers like this are routine and regularly granted — for proximity, and for circumstances such as a move, custody or shared-parenting arrangements, or level of play availability. It just has to be filed and approved before the season.

One form per player, per season.

Before you start, have these ready

  • Player’s 2026-27 USA Hockey registration number
  • Player’s birthdate, and age bracket / level of play (for example, 12U A)
  • Your home address exactly as it appears on your federal tax return
  • The name of the association and rink whose boundary covers your home address
  • Driving mileage from your home address to both rinks (Google Maps is fine)
  • Any supporting documents you want to include (custody paperwork, proof of a recent move, school enrollment, and so on)

Writing the “Details to Support” section

A short, factual paragraph is all that’s needed. The committee is deciding whether the placement makes practical sense for your family, so focus on facts they can verify:

  • Drive time and distance to each rink, and why ours is the more workable option
  • How long the player has been with IYHL, and whether siblings play here
  • Work, school, or daycare logistics that make the commute practical
  • Custody or shared-parenting arrangements that affect where the player is during the week
  • Whether the appropriate age bracket or level of play is available at your home association

Keep it to the logistics of your family’s situation. Attach additional sheets or documentation if it helps make the case.

What happens next

  1. The Mid Am Competition Committee — four impartial members of the Mid Am Board of Directors — reviews the request.
  2. Once approved or denied, the form goes to the Mid Am President or designee for signature.
  3. Mid Am notifies all parties of the decision by email. We’ll follow up with you as well.

If your request is denied, you may appeal in writing to the Mid Am President within 14 days of notification. Appeals require a $250 fee and should be sent to John Karolcik at john.karolcik@icloud.com. A separate appeal panel appointed by the Mid Am President reviews the case, and its decision is final.

Questions

Email registrar@iyhl.club. We’d rather answer a question up front than have a waiver come back for a correction. If you’re not sure whether you need to file, ask us and we’ll check.
